M Freeman lives at the southern tip of the Salish Sea on the unceded land of the Medicine Creek Treaty Tribes. They work toward reckoning and resiliency at the intersection of contemplative, creative, and communal practices.
They are author of The Illuminated Space: A Personal Theory and Contemplative Practice of Media Art (The 3rd Thing, 2020), creator of Contemplative Rest, as well as Cinema Divina, project lead/co-curator of Good Symptom (The 3rd Thing, 2023-24), and a practicing contemplative guide.

Their work includes filmmaking, teaching, myriad retreats, and technology innovation in the public sphere. They wrote and directed the experimental feature film, Group, co-founded the media arts studio, Wovie, and they are the screenwriter/producer of Sophisticated about golden era film director, Dorothy Arzner.
M’s text and media arts lyric essays/poems have been published by The Fourth Genre, Ninth Letter, TriQuarterly, Blackbird, Rolling Stone, Abbey of the Arts, and The 3rd Thing Press Good Symptom video anthology. Their films are screened on PBS and in galleries, spirituality centers, and festivals worldwide.

M is the recipient of multiple Washington State Artist Trust Media Arts Fellowships, Artist Trust Grants for Artist Projects, The Arch & Bruce Brown Foundation Grant, and The Evergreen State College Faculty Foundation Grant. Their work has garnered lots of accolades.
